We’ve all been there — scratchy throat, stuffy nose, cough that just won’t quit. When a cold hits, the first instinct is often to ask for antibiotics. But the truth is, most colds are caused by viruses, and antibiotics won’t do anything to treat a virus.
That doesn’t mean you’re stuck feeling miserable. There’s a lot you can do to feel better fast, without jumping straight to a prescription.
Here are a few things I recommend to my patients all the time:
Tylenol or ibuprofen – These help with fever, sore throat, body aches, and just feeling generally crummy. You don’t have to have a fever for them to help!
Antihistamines – Medications like Zyrtec, Claritin, or Allegra can help dry up mucus and decrease that nagging post-nasal drip that causes coughing.
Flonase (or other nasal sprays) – This helps reduce swelling in your nasal passages and sinuses and can also help with post-nasal drip.
Mucinex (guaifenesin) – This makes mucus thinner and easier to clear out, especially when paired with plenty of fluids.
Other over-the-counter cold remedies – Many combination meds can help manage symptoms, but it’s important to read labels and avoid doubling up on ingredients like acetaminophen.
Colds can usually be managed at home, but there are sometimes when medical attention is the right call. According to the CDC, contact your provider if you experience:
Trouble breathing or very rapid breathing
Dehydration or trouble keeping fluids down
Fever lasting more than 4 days
Symptoms that don’t improve after 10 days
Symptoms (like fever or cough) that get better and then come back worse
Worsening of an existing chronic condition (asthma, heart failure, etc.)
At Summit View Primary Care, we’re always here to help you feel better — whether that means guiding you through home care or stepping in when things get more serious. If your symptoms aren’t improving or something just doesn’t feel right, don’t hesitate to call.
